Learning is a never ending cycle.

"If confusion is the first step to knowledge, I must be a genius."--Larry Leissner

There are a few steps to learning.

  1. Unconscious incompetence:  You don't know that you don't know something
  2. Conscious incompetence:  You know that you don't know something
  3. Conscious competence:  You have learned what you don't know but are consciously focused on performance
  4. Unconscious incompetence:  You have mastered the skill and perform without conscious effort.

The whole process begins with unconscious incompetence, meaning we simply don't know that we don't know something.  As soon as you're introduced to a new idea, immediately following that "ah-ha" moment, comes the next step, conscious incompetence.  Now you know that you don't know something.  I believe this is the state of confusion Larry Leissner is speaking about in this quote.  Being a lifelong learner I find myself in this confused state most of the time.  I'm always discovering that I don't something and eagerly looking to learn all I can about it.

There is an even greater benefit to being aware of how little I know:  I no longer feel the need to pretend or judge others. I am able to accept myself and others exactly as they are without judgment because I know I might not know enough to be right in my judgment.  It's freeing.  I realize that if I'm not 100% sure I know everything; I cannot be 100% sure in my judgment of another.

If confusion is the first step to knowledge, I must be a genius."--Larry Leissner
